About Us

It is the stated objective of the staff and management of Tofo Scuba to provide to our customers the highest standard of quality and service as it relates to scuba diving and scuba diver training.

This commitment to service excellence will be seen in our desire and ability to continually improve the standard of both our student training programs and our daily casual diver charters.

Of prime importance to us, is the safety and well being of all our customers and students. We will be measured by our ability to always supply well-maintained, safe diving equipment, good quality air and fully equipped, seaworthy dive boats at all times.

We undertake to always foster an environment conducive to the safer learning and enjoyment of scuba diving in a friendly and relaxed manner. Our attitude toward scuba diving and diver training will always be conservative.

Our Instructors

John Pears
John Pears is co-owner of Tofo Scuba, he was born in Pretoria South Africa, he moved to Margate where he owned the hotel Kenilworth on Sea. There he helped pioneer diving on Protea Banks. 14 years ago he started the diving at Barra Lodge, soon after Tofo Scuba was started by himself and Nikki. John is a NAUI, PADI and IANTD advanced Nitrox instructor and is also a genius with anything that needs to be fixed, a big plus in Mozambique. He has recently become a very proud father and his little boy keeps him busy when he is not at work.

Nikki Pears
Nikki Pears is co-owner of Tofo Scuba, she was born in Johannesburg South Africa. She qualified as a veterinary nurse at the university of Pretoria and then came to Mozambique for a 2 week holiday and fell madly in love with her instructor John. Together they ran the Barra Lodge dive centre which they then sold and started Tofo Scuba. Nikki is both a NAUI and PADI instructor and is also a very keen environmentalist, she has been involved in various conservation projects in the area, the biggest one being the stopping of local shark fining. Her life has recently changed as she has become a mommy to the beautiful baby, Cooper Alexander Pears!

Velmari Veldman
Velmari Veldman has been with us for a year and a half and we are proud to have her as a member of our team. She has been with us from open water through to assistant instructor, and is a hardworking, confident, straight-talking lovely young lady with a beautiful laugh and a really good sense of humour, albeit a bit odd sometimes. She loves fun, parties and diving and has a professional and no-nonsense approach to life which is admirable.

Tibea Hammann
Tibea is a new addition to our team, but not to Mozambique, she has been living and diving here for 9 years. She is currently an active staff instructor and loves teaching and diving. She is an avid underwater photographer, specialising in macro work. She loves exotic cooking and painting in her spare time.

Dinis Ventura
